More model informationIn early 1944 Phoenix caissons were constructed and launched from many coastal sites in the UK. As part of the D-Day Mulberry Harbours the caissons were towed across the channel to the North Coast of France and partly sunk to provide a stable barrier and platform.
There is little evidence left at the launch sites however at Stone Point near Lepe the concrete foundations can still be seen.
This model is an approximate reproduction of the foundations with additional representations of what is likely to have happened during the construction and launch process. The facts and figures have been accumulated from many different sources and are published here as a very likely scenario.

Thanks for the very prompt and positive reply. We will make sure that we display the shortlinks and give accreditation to you whenever possible. I anticipate great interest in the animation particularly from the owner of the Cadland Estate on whose land the Lepe Country Park and all the D-Day remains are situated. I am in constant touch with the Estate as part of my research. The Cadland Estate stretches from Lepe in the West right along the coast to Eaglehurst , close to Calshot Spit in the East. With very best wishes. Ian.
@macca27 Hi Ian. Thanks for your positive comments.
Please use as required in the classroom and also give your visitors the shortlink to the model - skfb.ly/6xysM or just f1xer@sketchfab in google search.
I find that the model loads and navigates most efficiently in a chrome browser but other browsers will work to a degree.
Good luck.
Good morning, I am conducting detailed research into the preparations for Operation Neptune and its part in Operation Overlord. I live about 2miles from Lepe Beach and continue to gather information, firsthand accounts and photos of the construction of Phoenix caissons ,6 of which were built and launched across Lepe beach/Stanswood Bay. I was delighted and amazed to find your brilliant 3D animated representation.
There is D-Day walk conducted by Rangers at Lepe Country Park ,that takes in the extensive remains of the building and launch construction that you have captured and depicted so well. Can you please let me know if you are able to grant us permission to use this animation in the small classroom for visitors. Thank you in advance and I look forward to hearing from you. Best wishes. Ian.
Amazing civil engineering for the period !
