This brick kiln site is located on Castle Island near the downtown waterfront at Washington, North Carolina. The kiln was used to burn oyster shell to make lime for shipboard and agricultural purposes from the mid-19th to early 20th century. Scattered oyster shell and coal fragments can be seen amongst the brick foundations. Earlier iterations of the kiln gave the island its name, “The Castle,” because the numerous brick structures resembled the turrets of a medieval castle.
