Rock crystal jar, Bishop Hyguald, Galloway Hoard3D Model
This is one of several rare objects wrapped and carefully placed within the silver-gilt lidded vessel in the lower deposit of the Galloway Hoard. The carved rock crystal object appears to date to the Roman period, making it several centuries older than the goldwork. In the 8th or 9th century, it was repurposed with gold mounts to make it into a jar. The base includes a Latin inscription reading ‘Bishop Hyguald had me made’.
See the object in its original wrappings before conservation.
