A large Apulian red-figure spherical pyxis, attributed to the Painter of Berlin F 3383, and dated to ca. 320 BCE. The vessel is 42.3 cm tall.
The pyxis is painted in the red-figure style, with polychrome highlights. The lower half is painted with a seated women looking at her reflection in a stylized mirror. Beside her is a tympanon drum, and in her left hand is a dish. The mirror may relate to the function of the pyxis, which were typically used for storage of cosmetics or jewellery. On the back of the lower half is a seated Eros, holding a lidded cista with a flower garland.
The top of the pyxis is decorated with a processional scene of a quadriga bearing a bejewelled woman, and an accompanying man in armour in a chariot. The armor is detailed with plating, and he wears a Boetian helmet with tassel. The chariot is being led by a pair of Erotes, as a hare runs beneath the horses’ feet.
