A quartzite cobble artifact from the Garden Creek archaeological site. This lithic shows evidence of oxidation on some of its surfaces. Evidence of oxidation on geological surfaces help archaeologists determine what the artifacts were exposed to during the time of thier creation and use. It also allows them to ask questions regarding the nature of the markings “was this cobble intentionally burned?” “Was there a natural fire in the area, or was it anthropogenic?” The GCAP excavated artifacts such as this one from 2010-2012. This artifact, along with others excavated from the site, can be accessed through the Garden Creek Virtual Exhibit.
