A joint research program between the Center for Digital Heritage and Geospatial Information at the University of South Florida and the National Park Service at Cumberland Island National Seashore is using innovative techniques with imaging and 3D mapping to create digital replicas or "twins" of existing architectural and cultural resources in the park. The program uses terrestrial laser scanning techniques with integrated reality capture and imaging strategies to create precise architectural documentation with millimeter-level accuracy. Features, architectural elements, select artifacts, and historically significant items are documented with high-resolution structured light scanning and photographic documentation. Additionally, virtual tour content is being developed to enable immersive site sharing and use for conditional surveys across the park locations.
