Ei swyddogaeth wreiddiol oedd llosgi’r calchfaen oedd yn cael ei mewnforio ar longau. Roedd y calch oedd yn cael ei greu drwy’r broses wedyn yn cael ei wasgaru ar gaeau i wella cynhyrchiant ac i leddfu’r pridd asidig naturiol yr ardal. Defnyddiwyd y calch hefyd i wneud morter calch ar gyfer gwaith adeiladu.
