This High cross shaft is likely late 9th century in date, which pre-dates the 13th century Church of St John. The stone was found in 1825 whilst the church was undergoing renovation work on the church porch and is believed to be a part of the “Waberthwaite 02” stone.
Crafted from local red sandstone, this artefact features hand-carved designs along two of the stones faces. Narrow Face B features a plant inspired composition, and Narrow Face D features an interlace motif.
