More model informationThis is a high-resolution micro-Digital Outcrop Model of the Ayton target where the Groken drill was performed by the Curiosity rover in the Glen Torridon region of Gale crater, Mars.
This model is made using 10 photos taken by the MAHLI instrument, a microscope mounted on the robotic arm of the rover Curiosity. These images were taken on sols 2857 and 2870, in September 2020, and are available on the JPL MSL Raw images archive.
This sandstone bed features very intriguing mm-scale manganese-rich nodule aligned onto mm-scale strata. These nodules are indicative of water-related processes during the transofrmation of the sediment into solid rock.
