The remains of a very large wooden ship lie in the sands at Cefn Sidan, Pembrey, Carmarthenshire. The hull of the ship is well-preserved with the bow towards the beach (the north-east). The starboard (righthand) side has broken away slightly and the break can be seen along the centre of the site where the lower timbers of the hull are exposed. The archaeological remains extend for just over 50m in length, meaning that the ship was probably a bit longer than that, as not all of the hull is preserved.
The identification of the ship is not currently known, but the most plausible candidate is the AUSTRALIA, a wooden ship of around 60m length, lost nearby in 1901.
The visible remains of the ship were recorded on the 21st February 2023. The ship is also listed in the National Monuments Record of Wales (NPRN 302164) https://coflein.gov.uk/en/site/302164/
