This is the skull of an early 19th century farmer from Griswold, Connecticut. His ribs showed signs of inflammation which is believed to have been caused by tuberculosis. Genetic genealogy has led researchers to believe his name was John Barber. Archaeologists discovered that his grave had been disturbed and his bones configured like a “skull and crossbones”. This practice is consistent with folklore in the region of how remains of people suspected of being vampires were dealt with to keep them from returning and attacking the living.
