SS Gothenburg (1875), Australia, survey 20203D Model
From Wikipedia: The SS Gothenburg was a steamship that operated along the British and then later the Australian and New Zealand coastlines. In February 1875, Gothenburg left Darwin, Australia and while en route to Adelaide it encountered a cyclone-strength storm off the north Queensland coast. The ship was wrecked on the Great Barrier Reef north-west of Holbourne Island on 24 February 1875. Twenty-two men survived, while between 98 and 112 others died, including a number of high-profile civil servants and dignitaries.
The GIRT survey of the Gothenburg was undertaken with three purposes in mind. Firstly, to gain a baseline understanding of the condition of the site. Secondly, to demonstrate the potential for public archaeology/citizen science to lead in systematically monitoring underwater cultural heritage sites in New Zealand. Thirdly, as a case study to demonstrate the utility of the GIRT survey methodology to inform underwater cultural heritage management.
