Built circa 1800, this family homestead may have been the oldest two story log cabin in Wilson County Tennessee. In 2021 it was being disassembled when it imploded. Some of the second floor logs were salvaged.
In 1797, brothers John (29) and Benjamin (31) Phillips migrated to what is now Watertown, TN from western Pennsylvainia. They were the genesis for most of the Phillips in Wilson County. John settled on what is now Hale Road near a natural spring just north of his homestead. The family cemetery is northeast a few hundred yards on a rise.
The 1801 original land purchase was 200 acres. The homestead was increased to about 350 acres over the next 40 years. John and Mary Phillips produced 11 children: 6 boys are 5 girls. All survived childhood and produced further generations.
The outside dimensions of the original cabin are 24’-4” wide x 18’-3” deep. 8/12 roof pitch.
