More model informationThe second of the principal three crosses at St. Andrew’s Church, Middleton, North Yorkshire. The side facing you as you load the model portrays a Viking warrior in his grave, or possibly seated on a throne. He is equipped with helmet, spear, sword, axe and wears a seax on his belt. On the other side is a Viking art style mythical beast of some kind. I’m not a an expert on these but it appears to be a singular ‘Jellinge’ style monster, though these are usually in a symmetrical pair. Up the narrow sides of the shaft and around the arms of the cross-head are a fairly standard interlace pattern. 9th-10th Century.
