Fossil Oyster Reef (NHMW-Geo 2021/0018/0001)3D Model
3D scan of a small part of the largest fossil oyster and mussel reef. The reef formed 16.5 million years ago in today’s Korneuburg Basin in Lower Austria. After a giant tsunami, huge quantities of sand and mud covered the dead reef, which led to its preservation.
The reef was prepared between 2005–2008 and can be visited at the “Weinviertel Fossil World”, a geopark in Stetten.
This fossil oyster reef is Number 26 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 9 of the NHM Vienna.
