More model informationThis 20 m wide stone diversion dam was commissioned by the Assyrian King Sennacherib at the start of the 7th century BC. It fed a subterranean tunnel that flowed 23 kilometers to the provincial capital city Arbail (modern Erbil/Hawler). Today it is threatened by gravel mining and seasonal flooding.
