Carved Stone Ball, Hillhead, Orkney3D Model
This Neolithic carved stone ball was found at Hillhead, St Ola, Orkney, in the late 19th century. Many stone balls exhibit 6 knobs, but this example is plain with the classic 6 knob design formed by incised circles. This stone ball was manufacture from a micaceous limonite sandstone and exhibits some surface spalling.
This artefact formed part of James Walls Cursiter’s (1851-1939) extensive collection of prehistoric artefacts from Orkney and Shetland. This collection was donated to the Hunterian Museum c.1914.
The circular white ‘884/’ label indicates this artefact was exhibited by Cursiter at the 1911 Scottish Exhibiton, Glasgow.
