In some instances, a gigapixel image of a subject is necessary (typically in large tabular slabs of siltstone or shale with trace/imprint fossils, or in metamorphic specimens to create high resolution maps of structural and deformational features).
This is typically done by propping the specimen at an angle with a wedge of wood (or a rock of some description), and taking a series of photographs to produce a photomosaic of the desired face of the subject. Shifting the camera/tripod after taking each photo. We typically process these image sets in Agisoft, but occasionally use Autopano Giga as well.
This method is also usefull for producing high resolution textures of incredibly detailed models.
Note: Each camera represents the location at which an image was taken. The turntable is typically covered by a circle of white cardstock, with a white backdrop.
