Section 6/20: Foundation Pit of the North Tower of the Western High Gate of Medinet Habu.
Given the costs of quarrying and transporting new stone, it is not surprising that the ancient Egyptians often recycled stone blocks from constructions that had fallen into disuse; this practice accounts in great measure for the stones missing from the Western High Gate. This section of the model shows the pit that once contained the foundation blocks for the gate’s north tower. A few large blocks have been left behind, and on one of them you can see a cut begun along the surface in an attempt to split the stone.
