West Axis
Section 1/20: The West Axis of the Western High Gate of Medinet Habu.
With the east axis in section 2, these two areas represent the main passage through the Western High Gate. The passageway was originally paved with sandstone, and its walls would have been faced with the same material. Based on the model provided by the Eastern High Gate, whose stone elements are still largely intact, the passageway’s walls would have been decorated with carved and painted scenes featuring the pharaoh, Ramesses III, interacting with deities and participating in other kingly activities. It is uncertain, however, whether this area of the Western High Gate was ever completed.
