When a sodium atom donates an electron to a chlorine atom, the sodium atom becomes a positively charged sodium ion and the chlorine atom becomes a negatively charged chloride ion. The electrostatic attraction of oppositely charged ions leads to the formation of a lattice of Na+ and Cl-.
