Burra Ness Broch is situated overlooking the sea on the eastern side of the island of Yell in the Shetland Isles, Scotland. On the east side of the broch the outer wall survives to a height of upto 4.25 metres. Surrounding the broch are the remains of outbuildings along with probable defensive earthworks. In simplistic terms a broch is a stone tower built in the Iron Age, most brochs were occupied 2000 years ago.
It is likely that stone from the broch was taken to build crofts/farm 100 metres to the south. There are a whole series of structral remains here in varied condition, they represented crofts until the 1860s-1870s when the crofters were cleared from the land to make way for a sheep farm.
