We hear a lot these days about scanning historical sites which are in danger of being destroyed by acts of violence. Here is a historic site which is in danger of being destroyed by an act of nature every summer. Merced Lake Ranger Station stands guard over the Merced river canyon far upstream of where the river crashes to the floor of Yosemite valley forming Nevada and Vernal falls. Being almost 15 miles from the nearest road, the ranger station is probably pretty low on most people’s list for a structure to scan in Yosemite. I happened to be hiking by last summer and shot a quick casual scan. Only a few miles away the trail passes through Lost Valley which was devastated by the 2014 Meadow fire, a poignant reminder of the danger that these structures face every summer.
