In the early 18th century, Robert Walpole used the site for his gardens and a number of buildings associated to its use. These vaults are thought to have been constructed between 1715 and 1745 associated with Walpole’s ownership of the site. The primary features which are likely to be encountered are those related to Walpole’s development of the site in the 18th century. The earliest phase of the structure comprised a wall which ran along the northern edge of the structure. The next phase comprised the construction of the three large vaults which extended north from the open façade into the terrace and a large vault which ran east west along the northern end of the north‐south vaults. Below these vaults were a number of small culverts. The exact function of this phase is uncertain however evidence indicated that it was possibly related to water management.
