More model informationIt is believed to originate in the Visigothic period, possibly in the seventh or eighth century. During the Muslim invasion of the Iberian peninsula it was converted into a mosque. In 1259 a new church was built under the invocation of Santa Maria, on the initiative of Afonso III of Portugal. The parish was designated as “Santa Maria da Feira” since, also by permission of D. Afonso III, in 1261, in the area around the church, the village fair was held.
