More model informationThis internal mould of a pelecypod (bivalve mollusc) displays the diagnostic bilateral symmetry parallel to the hingeline, which distinguishes the group from brachiopods, which have bilateral symmetry perpendicular to the hingeline. As such, pelecypods have valves (shells) that are identical in size, and the shapes are mirror images of each other. Unlike brachiopods whose larger pedicle valves are attached or buried in the seafloor substrate in a prostrate orientation, pelecypods sat ‘upright’ with the heavy hingline anchoring them.
