The Mogadishu lighthouse
The crumbling Lighthouse perched on the edge of Mogadishu’s Old Harbor was built over a century ago and abandoned some 20 years ago as trade dried up and the failed state of Somalia descended. It is one of the landmark buildings of Mogadishu, even after it has been largely reduced to ruins during the war. Now it stands as a reminder of the spectacular city Mogadishu once was, a bullet-pocked shell left to rot as a haven for homeless fishermen.
This is part of an ongoing project looking at some of the most important buildings in Mogadishu. These buildings stood still during the war and have now turned into some of the well-known ruins around the city.
Along the Lighthouse we have recreated all these buildings in a 3D model that can be accessed anywhere, anyone with the internet. Once finished we will envision the future of Mogadishu using current trends in the economy, politics, and other major factors.
