Empire Anchor is a simulated model, rendered with historic data. It comprises a single fluke anchor, stock and shackle, clad in Union Jack colours.
The chain is formed of 62 colonial links carrying colours vaguely relative to national flag identity. These are connected in chronological order, with dates displayed of British rule or protectorate obligation and subsequent break from empire. The model rests on an Empire map of 1907, which is purely a random date.
Primarily, it is an attempt to data-contexturalise ‘Empire’ using a maritime heritage object. The notion of presenting info graphics in this way is a major facet of my work.
I have however, appended a slightly contentious strapline to the shaft in the hope that symbolism, or indeed irony never gets lost in translation.
This model is the precursor for my extended ANCHOR portfolio and the catalyst for a major project which I hope to launch in 2018.
