A 3D interpretation of the classic Memphis ‘Bel Air’ chair originally designed by Peter Shire in 1982.
Memphis was a design collective established by Ettore Sottsass in 1981. Its objective was to create colourful, abstact postmodern pieces fit for times of prosperity and accelerating industrialism. Despite lasting only a few years, it left an ongoing impact on the world of design, with some of the pieces, including Bel Air chair, still in production.
The chair’s geometric bold style epitomises the iconic look and feel of 80s. The ‘Bel Air’ chair became a signature design of the movement, featuring prominently in books and magazines about the era.
This particular 3D model had been designed and textured in Autodesk Fusion 360, to test colour quality and resolution of full-colour, multi-material Additive Manufacturing systems (Stratasys’ Polyjet J750 and Mimaki 3DUJ-553).
