Scale armor was worn throughout the republican period. Until the end of the 1st century AD, they were predominantly reserved for officers and riders. Scale armor consisted of iron plates which were connected with bronze wire. Armored riders of the Roman army were armored with scales all over their bodies, their limbs protected by ring rails.
