More model informationSchist is a medium-grade metamorphic rock. This particular example is a two-mica schist of pelitic origin. It is distinguished from lower grade phyllite by having minerals that are visible with the unaided eye. Unlike slate and phyllite, schists have also undergone complete recrystallisation, with none of the original sedimentary grains still present. It is distinguished from higher grade gneiss by a lack of metamorphic segregation into light and dark bands. Note that the layering present here is not sedimentary in origin, but tectonic. Growth of new phyllosilicates such as muscovite and biotite creating a planar structure in the rock. This sample also contains quartz and plagioclase.
