Trichechus manatus, also called the West Indian manatee or the North American manatee, is a large aquatic mammal native to the coastlines of North and Central America in the Atlantic Ocean. The North American manatee has two subspecies, both of which are endangered according to the IUCN. The closest non-manatee relatives to the North American manatee are elephants and hyraxes, with a fossil record that originates in the Eocene of Africa. This specimen is a complete skull.
