The politician Joseph Hume (1777-1855) entered Parliament as a Tory in 1812. By 1830 he had become a radical who championed universal suffrage and religious freedom. Hume represented his birthplace, Montrose, in parliament from 1842 until his death. Ritchie’s bust shows him in the fashionable style of a classical hero.
