Nelson Knife (VCU_3D_1945)3D ModelNoAI
According to Curator Tracey Neikirk, this special utensil made by the J. Russell Cutlery Company in Massachusetts. The shape allowed an amputee to rock the knife back and forth to cut their food, and the long tines were used for picking it up. It was 3-D scanned with a NextEngine Desktop 3-D scanner at the Isle of WIght County Museum in Springfield, Virginia, on December 10, 2015. The model has some problematic elements and a viable version was created by Forensic Anthropologist Terrie Simmons-Ehrhardt on May 19, 2020.
