More model informationIn 1801, Charles Willson Peale directed the recovery of mastodon skeletons in New York, recovering most of two individual specimens. Replicas were fashioned to replace missing elements using one mastodon as reference for the other. This wooden mastodon vertebra may have been carved by the Peale family’s enslaved servant Moses Wolliams or sculptor William Rush who was better known at the time as a skilled carver of figureheads for ships. The artistry and accuracy in this vertebra is stunning. It was 3-D scanned with a NextEngine Desktop 3-D scanner at the Maryland Historical Society on December 16, 2019.
