In-situ Mesolithic timber, Bouldnor Cliff (BC V)3D ModelNoAI
Recorded in July 2018, these timbers were disovered at the Mesolithic occupation site at Bouldnor Cliff, Isle of Wight, UK. Similar material from this site has been dated to c. 8,100 years old.
As shown here, the timbers were found eroding out from below an overhanging peat and tree root outcrop of the cliff at a depth of 11m. Clearly threatened and possessing high archaeological potential, they were recovered following the recording of the feature and the wider submerged cliff by photogrammetry.
Subsequent analysis has shown that the timbers preserve a number of cut marks and evidence of conversion and shaping. The stakes were driven into the substrate and were not associated with any other natural root system or observed structure.
The timbers have been individually scanned by colleagues from Alexandria University and can be viewed by following the links in the annotations.
