The collapsed remains of a GHQ Auxiliary Unit Operational Base at Castleton, North York Moors. The OB was little more than a subterranean room built of corrugated iron and timber, and with a hidden tunnel for an entrance. Unusually there does not seem to be an alternative escape route.
The euphamistically-named ‘Auxiliay Units’ were small, secret units of fighting men whose job would have been guerrilla disruption of occupying forces after the military and Home Guard had ceased fighting in the event of a German invasion in the Second World War. Although officially uniformed Home Guard men, the units were top secret and only known by regional commanders and General Headquarters. In some areas there was a unit almost in every parish, and their bases were often simply a hidden rural hideaway like this example. Their life-expectancy was estimated to be 12 days after commencing operations, with orders not to be captured alive.
