More model informationThe Montpelier Archaeology department just finished one and half years excavation at the Grove. This model is only a very small portion of the 2018 excavation area to see the rest of the 2018 excavations visit https://skfb.ly/6FSQU. During Madison’s Retirement Period (1817-1836), there were several kinds of trees planted southwest of the main house to create a sight line to the house and block view of the South Yard slave quarters. The only evidence of these trees we found archaeologically are the runs where their roots used to be. The different colored soil in the root runs was excavated out leaving the divots in the ground you see in this model.
