This little navy soldier toy made of plastic, and around 4cm high, was laying around in an old toy chest at my house, and seemed like a good candidate for my first-ever photogrammetry scan, and I must say the result turned out better than I expected!
To scan it with OpenSource softwares only, I used colmap and OpenMVS as suggested by Peter Falkingham on his blog (look for the update at the end of the post).
I took around 70 pictures from 3 angles with a Canon EOS1100D (12Mpx), rotating the model on a cheap wooden turntable used for cheese.
Sadly, parts where the texture was quite plain turned out as holes in the model, and the real cavities in the model (armpits and legs) were filled during the surface reconstruction step…
But still, it’s something! :-)
